Gallium Nitride

Gallium Nitride

At CREST, we delve deep into the world of Gallium Nitride (GaN) research, exploring its immense potential to revolutionize industries across the globe.

Why this programme?

  • The global market for GaN will be worth USD 82 billion by 2024.
  • Pioneering upstream LED research capabilities in Malaysia alongside industry and academic partners – shared facilities resources.
  • Continue the LED development in Malaysia so it maintains its top 3 position globally.
  • Creating a full LED ecosystem for Malaysia from the front-end to the back-end, supply chain and logistic.

Program Highlights

Collaboration with Nobel prize winner, Professor Shuji Nakamura & University of Carlifornia Santa Barbara (UCSB) in 2016.

First Malaysia grown epitaxial lighted up in July 2016.

GaN research to extend beyond solid state lighting into applications such as power devices, communications, horticulture.

A GaN Research Alliance is formalized in 2020 to optimise utilisation of facilities for maximum impact.

Established 2 specialized GaN labs in Malaysia that mirror Prof. Shuji’s labs in UCSB.

Produced 80 GaN research experts and engineers.

CREST collaborates with University Sains Malaysia to produce one of the most efficient white LEDs in the world.

Did you know

  • Gallium does not occur in its natural elemental state, but is extracted from several minerals.
  • Discovered in 1875 by the french chemist Paul Emile (Francois) Lecoq de Boisbaudran while searching for the missing element between Aluminium and Indium on the Periodic Table.
  • Gallium is mostly utilised to make a single compound; gallium arsenide. It can turn electrical current into light; i.e utilised to make LEDs.
  • In its purest extracted form, gallium is a vibrant silver color. As a solid, it is blue-gray.
  • Approximately 95% of gallium consumption is in the electronics industry. Gallium arsenide and gallium nitride represt about 98% of gallium consumption in the United States.
