CREST’s Contextual Research Culture Drives Impactful Solutions

“In bringing about such collaborations, CREST has created a new research culture whereby scientists must now engage with industries to solve industrial problems. I always emphasize that research must be in context. If you lose that context, research will not be as meaningful and impactful as it should be.”

Professor Dr. Zaidi Mohd Ripin

Professor, School of Mechanical Engineering and Head of TheVibrationLab, Universiti Sains Malaysia

“To produce a world-class dish, you need the right ingredients and a good chef. In the context of Collaborative R&D, CREST has shown us that it is possible for our local chefs to churn out world-class dishes using local materials in a local kitchen. That is a success story that more people should hear about.”

T.K. Tan

Managing Director of Clarion Malaysia Sdn. Bhd.

“CREST has been instrumental in facilitating Collaborative R&D projects and serving as a catalyst for industry-academia collaborations. Sometimes, it’s not as simple as bringing the industry and the academia together, but also serving as a bridge for funding and matching the right parties together. CREST has played its role well.”

Goon Koon Yin

Chief Executive Officer & Executive Director of TT Vision Holdings Berhad

“Everybody understands that CREST operates neutrally. It does not have a hidden agenda, and therefore, it has established itself as a go-to place for the industry. If you want to do R&D together with universities, involve CREST. Because that is the most efficient way to get it done.”

Dr. David Lacey

Director of Advanced Development & Services, R&D, of ams OSRAM Group

“We were a CREST incubatee. We started in the rented CREST collaboration area. Over the years, we received great collaborative support and mentorship from CREST. I truly appreciate and recognise CREST’s efforts, especially in the Penang semiconductor industry.”

Dr. Sideq Salleh delivered a plenary speech at ICoSeMT 2025, hosted by Universiti Sains Malaysia INOR in Penang, showcasing how industry–academia–government collaboration is driving Malaysia’s semiconductor future.

At CREST, we are proud to enable this ecosystem — uniting universities, industry leaders, and government to accelerate advanced R&D and innovation.

A flagship example is the CREST GaN Programme with Nobel Laureate Prof. Shuji Nakamura from UC Santa Barbara. With support from Malaysian academia, industry, and government incentives, the programme has:
🔹 Built cutting-edge GaN research capabilities in universities
 🔹 Nurtured world-class semiconductor talent
🔹 Attracted high-value FDI in wide bandgap semiconductors

This is how Malaysia is climbing the semiconductor value chain and advancing the National Semiconductor Strategy (NSS) — turning collaboration into global impact.

CREST was proud to have Dr. Shahrul Yahaya representing us at Monash University Malaysia’s plenary session on “How Academia, Industry, and Government can Accelerate Commercialisation.”

Dr. Shahrul highlighted a key truth:
- Academic research is okay not to meet market needs, but industry research must.
- Success in collaboration is when 1+1 = 3 — benefiting industry, academia, and ultimately national development.

At CREST, we continue to act as a catalyst in bridging academia and industry to create real-world impact through innovation, talent development, and commercialization.

Strengthening Malaysia’s Semiconductor Future

CREST is honoured to be part of the X-FAB Sarawak 40K Fab Expansion Launch Ceremony — a MYR 3 billion investment that expands production capacity to 40,000 wafers per month.

This milestone not only creates new high-skilled job opportunities, but also strengthens Sarawak’s position in analog and mixed-signal semiconductor manufacturing, where X-FAB is a global leader.

Targeting applications in EV battery management, medical devices, and industrial automation, this initiative is further supported by the establishment of a 10-acre R&D facility at Samajaya Free Industrial Zone, positioning Sarawak as a hub for semiconductor design, system integration, and prototyping.

Together with strategic collaborations such as the UK CSA Catapult, CREST continues to support Malaysia’s aspiration to be at the forefront of global semiconductor innovation.
