CREST’s Contextual Research Culture Drives Impactful Solutions

“In bringing about such collaborations, CREST has created a new research culture whereby scientists must now engage with industries to solve industrial problems. I always emphasize that research must be in context. If you lose that context, research will not be as meaningful and impactful as it should be.”

Professor Dr. Zaidi Mohd Ripin

Professor, School of Mechanical Engineering and Head of TheVibrationLab, Universiti Sains Malaysia

“To produce a world-class dish, you need the right ingredients and a good chef. In the context of Collaborative R&D, CREST has shown us that it is possible for our local chefs to churn out world-class dishes using local materials in a local kitchen. That is a success story that more people should hear about.”

T.K. Tan

Managing Director of Clarion Malaysia Sdn. Bhd.

“CREST has been instrumental in facilitating Collaborative R&D projects and serving as a catalyst for industry-academia collaborations. Sometimes, it’s not as simple as bringing the industry and the academia together, but also serving as a bridge for funding and matching the right parties together. CREST has played its role well.”

Goon Koon Yin

Chief Executive Officer & Executive Director of TT Vision Holdings Berhad

“Everybody understands that CREST operates neutrally. It does not have a hidden agenda, and therefore, it has established itself as a go-to place for the industry. If you want to do R&D together with universities, involve CREST. Because that is the most efficient way to get it done.”

Dr. David Lacey

Director of Advanced Development & Services, R&D, of ams OSRAM Group

“We were a CREST incubatee. We started in the rented CREST collaboration area. Over the years, we received great collaborative support and mentorship from CREST. I truly appreciate and recognise CREST’s efforts, especially in the Penang semiconductor industry.”

Our first Teh Tarik (pulled tea) meet-up at our office in Penang went well. The gathering was akin to our western counterparts’ ‘beer nights’ which is really a way for our community to come together in an informal setting to get to know each other. It was also an opportunity to briefly update everyone on what’s going on with CREST since becoming an agency under MITI, some of the initiatives we are working on. For our next Teh Tarik, we plan on inviting several funding parties to meet the community, including Kumpulan Modal Perdana, Ilham Capital, the Hive SEA, Penjana Kapital, Openspace Ventures, Bluechip, and more! Throwback Thursday: The launch of our Teh Tarik with CREST back in January. Teh Tarik with CREST aims to gather like-minded individuals for a casual yet impactful conversation about the development of our E&E community in Malaysia. We hope to have frequent sessions like these where we will propose exciting topics that the community can come by to experience and discuss in a casual, informal setting.

Our first session focused on the development of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and local companies in Malaysia. We introduce the Local Companies Development and Transformation Committee (LCDTC) and what the committee aims to achieve.

It was a huge hit, and we want to thank everyone who joined us for making it such a successful first session. Stay tuned for our next Teh Tarik session, which will happen soon. Want to join us for our next one? Drop us a comment or a DM and we will be in touch.Image attachmentImage attachment+Image attachment
